AHS Poutine

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Or, as the early 90s cafeteria staff called it… “Fries all the way”.

I just read a Houston Press Eating our Words blog post about the Tex-Cajun poutine at BB’s in Montrose. I haven’t had a chance to get over there for some food, but it’s on my list of places I want to go sometime soon. This dish reminded me again of the indomitable SUB cafeteria favorite from high school, the “all the way”.

You could get this as Chicken Fried “Steak”, burrito or fries. As you might assume, it consisted of a bed of french fries, with the entree of choice on top, open face if the steak. Cover that in a handful of school issue orange cheese & thoroughly drench in what was probably a mix of enchilada & brown gravies.

Now, I’m sure that the school & their nutritional guidelines/regulations have rendered it an ancient being. Especially since I know my brother who graduated 3-4 years ago had no idea what it was.

Those students from Alvin High around the early 90s would recall this interesting culinary science experiment.

Skool Daze

I enrolled in class out at the local college for the Spring in order to start working on my education again. I’ve enrolled in English 1302, which may not be too smart, considering I took 1301 in the Spring of 95. I also am taking Finite Math, which seems like math for business (so far it’s been like interest calculations and APY and such).

I feel a little out of place, since back when I took night classes in the late 90s, they were mostly older folks with a few of us young’uns. Now, it seems like the classes are 90% young students, with a few older. I’m probably the only person over 30 in my math class.

This is all starting the momentum to complete my Bachelor degree in something. I’ve looked over what the University Center at the local college offers, and I’m leaning toward a CIS degree offered by UH Downtown (or whatever their new name will be). It seems to fit well with my existing career path, and will hopefully allow me to work into a better position no matter who I’m working for in the future.

Alvin student to graduate college before high school

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Via Fox 26′s morning news. An Alvin HS student will graduate college before high school. It’s just a associates degree from ACC, but it made the news. Stranger part is that it’s likely he’s a relative. My surname is Schueneman, his is Schuenemann. My father was the only one of 7 siblings whose birth certificate was missing the additional n at the end.

I’m sure Mom will know how he fits in the family tree.

Goals 2008

Friday, January 4th, 2008

Yeah, I’ve done some resolution stuff, but haven’t laid out goals for 08. A post over at another blog has reminded me of that. So, I’m going to set forth some goals for the year, and try to review those as the year progresses.

Health – for 2008, I want to continue to lose weight, and considering that I did decently on this in 07, I want to set a goal of 200 lbs for 2008. This would actually put me at a lower weight than when I graduated high school (I was around 225 then).

Career – I know this is a touchy one, since I really like where I work, but I want to expand my horizons and be able to make more money. So, rather than complete the MS cert I started in 07, or the Cisco ones that they’re offering via work, I will set my goal to take at least 2 courses at our local college. We have a branch near the office that’s part of the same district that’s near our home. I can take a lunchtime class or a night class and whether it’s for credit or other learning, I’m going to get back in the saddle. As part of that, I think I can increase my income by at least $5000/yr, and that would be an excellent move.

Financially – My net worth is lacking due to credit issues and other outstanding debt. So, my goal is to pay off and close at least 1 credit card and to open an IRA account and automatically contribute at least 5% to it. I also need to start saving away for our vacation that we’ll take once we’ve hit our weight loss goals. This Germany trip will be fairly expensive, so if I can start saving for it now, we should be able to have a great time without using credit cards by the time we want to go.

Other – I’m going to set a goal to clean my computer room by Feb 28, and our garage by the end of May. These 2 parts of our house have gone too long looking like crap, and those are my main responsibility. We had grandiose plans last year to rework the garage into a lounge and haven’t done a damn thing for that. If we can clean it up, that can become more usable space so easily.

Goals:

  • 200 lbs
  • 2 classes
  • $5000 more income
  • Close 1 credit card
  • Open IRA by 2/1 & automatically contribute 5%
  • Save $50/month toward Germany Vacation
  • Clean computer room by 2/28
  • Clean garage by 5/31
