AHS Poutine

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Or, as the early 90s cafeteria staff called it… “Fries all the way”.

I just read a Houston Press Eating our Words blog post about the Tex-Cajun poutine at BB’s in Montrose. I haven’t had a chance to get over there for some food, but it’s on my list of places I want to go sometime soon. This dish reminded me again of the indomitable SUB cafeteria favorite from high school, the “all the way”.

You could get this as Chicken Fried “Steak”, burrito or fries. As you might assume, it consisted of a bed of french fries, with the entree of choice on top, open face if the steak. Cover that in a handful of school issue orange cheese & thoroughly drench in what was probably a mix of enchilada & brown gravies.

Now, I’m sure that the school & their nutritional guidelines/regulations have rendered it an ancient being. Especially since I know my brother who graduated 3-4 years ago had no idea what it was.

Those students from Alvin High around the early 90s would recall this interesting culinary science experiment.

Is WalMart trying to tell me something? Are they suggesting a perfect addition to this tasty snack? Sorry for the terrible quality – testing my cell phone camera.

We’ve been back for a week, and damn that’s a city that I really like. It’s kinda like escaping to a bit of Europe for a weekend.

Excellent food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Nice drinks on Rue Bourbon Friday night, lots of interesting places & things in the city.

Highlights:
Best Meal – Saturday Lunch at The Praline Connection.
Best Drink – Hand Grenade at Tropical Isle
Best Music – Becky singing onstage at Club 544. :)
Best Food Network groupie moment (aka places we should have ate at but didn’t) – Tie – Bailey’s Andouille Sausage place on Hwy 61 from Alton Brown’s Feasting on Asphalt and Tee Eva’s Soul Food on Magazine St from The Dean Brother’s show Road Tasted.

Back from Corpus

We made it back from our weekend getaway late yesterday. Had a great time, even with the few bumps in the road that come with any vacation.

Highlights:

  • Got sausage & jalapeno bread and some turkey jerky at Prasek’s on the way down
  • Ate at Wienerschnitzel
  • Awesome hotel room @ Holiday Inn Padre Island Dr
  • Found a kick-ass breakfast place, Andy’s Kitchen
  • Audrey loved the aquarium
  • Met up with Victor & Donnie late Friday
  • Ate at Andy’s again on Saturday morning
  • Had good chi-fry at K2 Steakhouse in Bay City

Lowlights:

  • Got a broken window on the car Thursday afternoon
  • Audrey’s schedule was off kilter so she wasn’t her best sometimes

All in all a good trip and a nice weekend away. Too bad it’s Sunday night and we get to go back to work tomorrow.
